Broadway for People

The opening of the Broadway Subway creates an incredible opportunity to create a Better Broadway, with more space for people to move and gather and safe travel routes for all road users.

Unfortunately, despite widespread public input and a Council vote in support of adding protected mobility lanes on Broadway now, when it’s already being rebuilt with the Subway extension, City staff are advising Council NOT to add these lanes now. Instead City staff are prioritizing curb space for parking, while leaving open the possibility of adding mobility lanes at some nebulous future date.

On March 29, Vancouver Council will revisit this debate and vote on next steps for active transportation on Broadway. OneCity Councillor Christine Boyle is asking Vancouver Council to support Option 2 or 3 in the Report to Council, which would widen sidewalks and create safe active mobility lanes for bikes, scooters and other micro-mobility.

In Vancouver, 40% of our carbon emissions come from transportation. Those emissions create health impacts for residents - often low and middle income renters - living along busy arterials. Local hospital data shows that transportation related injuries are the second highest cause of serious injuries.

Thousands of new residents will call this area home over the next 30 years, or will come for work. The corridor should be designed to allow people on foot, bike, and scooter to shop at local businesses, to get kids to school, to visit friends and access services.

A Broadway Safe for All

On March 29th, Council will make a final decision on the street design for Broadway. We only have a few days to convince the ABC Councillors to support options 2 or 3 in the staff report, which include safe active mobility lanes.

This is the first big active transportation vote for the new ABC majority Council, and it’s important that they hear from residents who care about safe streets, clean air, and healthier communities for us all. Your voice matters. Write an email to Council now.
